I've been hearing about this place for over 4 years and never ventured the hour drive because it seemed to far...... Let me tell you, it's not!!! I would drive several hours for the deliciousness that awaits at the Whistling Bird! First, the vibe and decor is a breath of fresh air. Second, the staff are super friendly. Third, and most importantly, the food is amazing. We tried the stuffed mushrooms and bacon wrapped shrimp appetizers. Both were amazing. We shared a jerk platter and....mmmmmm. Jerk pork, shrimp and chicken with rice and hush puppies. You just have to have it! Go now. Seriously
Wow. What a treat. Huge portions. Great food does not cover how good it was. The steak was perfectly medium rare. The smoked gouda cheese soup was honestly THE BEST SOUP WE HAVE EVER HAD!!! We had never been here and based on a friends recommendation, we went there. The staff was very friendly. I wish they were closer to the twin cities. I guess we will just need to make another long trip here, but it is so worth it.
Thanks again Yelp. Found this excellent restaurant hidden away in Gilbert MN. For the Iron Range, the shift away from deep-fried-American "fare" is definitely noticeable. Numerous tropical rum drinks on the menu - some with cool tiki head glasses. The food is authentic and awesome; Jamaican jerk pork/chicken, shrimp dishes, curry, and lamb. I had a terrific Caesar salad followed by a curry dish w/ sweet potato & shrimp.
- the ice tea seemed homemade and very tasty. Give it a shot.
Top five places I have ever ate! What a great menu and experience! Northern Minnesota and you can eat Jamaican cuisine! Its superb. Even the drinks were spectacular! Well done. Will visit again! Bourbon smash, the jerk platter, shrimp and lobster Alfredo and a raspberry mojito! Forgot to get a pic of the house and Caesar salad oh and bread that the entrées came with! We also had the mushroom caps as an app! Delicious! Do yourself a favor and eat here! PS try the Jamaican jerk!
Love the Bird! My two favorite dishes are the black and blue steak (filet) and the linguini with garlicky shrimp and lobster. The salads are fresh and tasty, with really good dressings. The bread is another treat that my husband especially loves, served with garlic oil and butter. And of course you can't go wrong with a pina colada or some type of tropical drink while you're dining!
